EDUCATION PROGRAMS 2020-21

Individual scholarships

Hemashree:- Medical student at Bapuji Ayurvedic Medical Collage, Chellakare, Karnataka, graduated and is undergoing practical training. We supported her for a total of 5 years with partial tuition coverage.

Evangeline Sharon:  First year  student  at St  Anne's collage, Bangalore was given tuition fees for one year to allow her to continue her studies. Covid related economic hardship made it impossible for her pay her college fees during 2020-21.

Online Programs: We reinvented ourselves and started several online programs with encouraging results.

Conversation English

One-on-one conversational English:-  Children aged  5 to 14 participate in a one-on-one online conversation English program started during the Covid lock-down in July 2020. A trial pilot was conducted with 10 children and 10 volunteers from around the world, with very good results. This program has become a regular offering to children in the slum - in particular for students going to the local government school, where is English is lacking. The volunteers who give their time  generously, were from two schools in California:-  Crescenta Valley and Burlingam High. The program is slated to continue in 2021 - 2022.

Saturday Activity on Zoom

The conversational English Program was complemented with three weekly activities (Zoom).

Library: English lending Library was started for the slum, with a donation of 263 books from Little Learners and others.  It has been a big hit with the girls in particular. The freedom to choose a book and take it home is something new for them. The library has also become a conduit for us to assess ability of students.

Mentoring of Parents during Covid crisisIn collaboration with VIVA India, Leora Trust ran a mentoring program for parents to council them on how to handle challenges during COVID 19. This program included methods to improve their child's education and be alert to emotional challenges during the pandemic. Kavita Verma who was earlier with Leora Trust worked with 33 parents.
